You know how much you make an hour, but do you realize what those hours cost you?

My spouse and I have always been misfits. From eloping, to moving all the way across the country, to electing to be childfree, we continue to confuse our traditional family’s minds with our “weird and radical” choices. Even with growing desensitization to our unconventional decisions, the most recent announcement still came as a surprise to them.

Three months ago, as a married couple just shy of 40 years old, we announced that we were going to walk away from our full-time careers and drop to part-time hours. At a time that our peers were maxing out their workloads, we walked…

How Did We End Up Here?

We have all heard the adage, ‘Divided we fall, united we stand,’ but now we are actually living it. Currently, the USA is crippled by an unprecedented lack of unity, and we only have ourselves to blame. How did we end up here?

Our country started to become divided under the Bush administration when Democrats began to incessantly bash and insult the president. This planted a seed that grew to form a crack that split us down party lines.

Under Obama, Republicans worsened this…

It’s time we work together against the real enemy instead of needlessly fighting one another.

I’ve never understood how so many pregnancies are “accidents”, but after seeing the way many people wear their masks in public, I’m starting to piece it together. Some refuse to even wear a mask because they are under the illusion that they are invincible, which also sheds light on the pregnancy slip-ups.

Unfathomably, I was called a moron at the post office on Friday as an unmasked thug (a white guy, thugs come in all colors) yelled at me that the virus “is not even…

Take notice of all the things you have changed in your life for the better.

My dogs think 2020 is the best year ever. Their people are both home all day every day. Laps, treats, walks and playtime galore — all their favorite things in life are now given in abundance. While they think “best”, I would say “uncomfortable” would be a more apt adjective to apply to the year thus far.

A Whole New World

Realizing the dichotomy of thought that likely exists between dogs and their people, got me reflecting over how much life has changed over the past month. And oh the things I miss! Never before have I longed so badly to hit the trails…

An opinion piece exposing the revolting truth about current frontline conditions in healthcare.

What we have currently in America in 2020, is the perfect storm.

“Three great forces rule the world: stupidity, fear and greed.” — Albert Einstein.

COVID-19 has turned the world upside down, but nowhere feels quite as surreal as the frontline of healthcare in America. Healthcare workers everywhere have been too shocked or fearful of retaliation to expose the risks that we, and by consequence, all of you, are currently facing.

And all the reasons why you should be reading it.

In case you’ve been out of pocket for the last few weeks, the much-hyped book, American Dirt by Jeanine Cummings, was released to early acclaim on January 21st, 2020. That same day Oprah declared it her next book club selection.

The fictional novel is about a middle-class Mexican woman and her son that attempt to flee for their lives to the United States due to a powerful cartel fervently chasing them after murdering their entire family.

Very shortly after its release, it was met with an intense backlash from critics…

Reflections following a milestone high school reunion.

Recently my 20-year high school reunion happened, like already. I didn’t attend in person as I live on the other side of the country now, but I did reconnect with many of my old friends online. They had changed, yet we're still the same.

Most that I used to be close to I still find magnetic, though a few I would never be friends with now. …

A Stellar Reads book recommendation.

“Let’s not go there.” That’s what people always say about places where they already are.

Stellar Reads:

Some well known, bestseller books are overrated, over-hyped disappointments. Meanwhile, incredible books can languish on the shelves, receiving only a fraction of the attention and publicity they deserve.

Stellar Reads shines a light on these overlooked gems. There is an excerpt from the synopsis (because often the back of the book tells you more than you need to know), the first sentence, favorite quotes and why it deserves to be read. …

If ghosts haunt houses, why would there not also be hauntings under the sea?

It’s easy to dismiss the idea of ghosts in the daylight, on a warm summer day, while safe on dry land. But the first time Graham encountered one, he was 72 feet underwater, exploring a shipwreck off the coast of Cornwall on Halloween.

All Hallow’s Eve, All Saint’s Day, Samhain, whatever one calls it, is a day that the veil between worlds is the thinnest, ripe for breaching by those that have passed away. …

“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” — Kahlil Gibran

The day I graduated from university, I thought I saw my grandfather in the audience, but knew it was not possible because I had killed him five years earlier. Not intentionally, of course. He was the only family I knew and I admired him. He was my home. But my foolish actions killed him nonetheless.

My life has been one of sorrow for as long as I can recall. I don’t remember my mother as she was in and out of my life, mostly out, until she finally disappeared for good when I was 8 years old. If I ever…
